Peb Fort or Vikatgad via Fanaswadi route : A must trek every monsoon

Vikatgad :

Top of Peb Fort or Vikatgad

Peb Fort, also known as Vikatgad is situated at a distance of 3-4 km on west side of Neral. Height of the fort is 2100 ft. This fort is in continuation with the Malang gad, Tauli Hill and Chanderi fort of the Matheran Hill Range. This is one of the most beautiful one-day treks near Mumbai, especially in monsoon. The mesmerizing scenic view and heat-treating beauty of several mountains along with its panoramic view make it a perfect spot for nature lovers. It provides the best alternative to otherwise crowded neighbouring hill stations.

The fort derives it name from the Goddess ‘Pebi’; The fort is also named as ‘VikatGad’ for its supposed shape of the Elephant Headed God, ‘Ganesh’. The Historical references of the location and the chain of caves is a must to visit and explore in this monsoon season. It is believed that Shivaji Maharaj used these caves as silos for grain storage.

About the Fort Trek :

This fort has 2 routes. I had already visited this fort via the 'Matheran route' early in the monsoon (6 oct,19) and was immediately enticed by its beauty as the surrounding mountains on the way were covered with yellow, blue and pink flowers completely. But recently I came to know that there is another way to the top: 'Fanaswadi route'. Unlike other treks, these two route don't merge in between. They directly meet at the top at the temple. There are many caves and water reservoirs which are seen only via the latter route which I had missed in my former trek. The 'Fanaswadi route' requires more strength and stamina as compared to 'Matheran route'. Also, there is a patch that requires a rope (which is always already secured at that patch, thanks to someone unknown, so no need to carry your own). So I had to visit again (I love challenging treks :-P).

Reaching neral:

l planned a quick trek on 29th Dec,19 with my three other college friends. I left Bhayander by 5.08 am train on sunday morning and reached Dadar around 6.10 and then boarded the 6.24 am Dadar-Karjat train. We reached Neral around 8 am.

Reaching fanaswadi :

Since we were hungry we grabbed a quick combo of 'Kanda-poha' with Tea (trekkers ka emotion). Then after half an hour, we left for fanaswadi. You can opt for a shared auto or walk. The walk will take around 45 mins. Initially, the auto driver asked for ₹40 per seat, but when I said I wasn't new there and had already visited that fort, he agreed on ₹30. Around 20 mins later, i.e. at 9 am we were at the fanaswadi base village.

Trail till the top :

At the base village, you can ask the villagers or the rickshaw driver himself for the initial directions. It is very important to stay on track at the start as you can easily get distracted and may be lost in the forest.

Somewhere in between the trail
Wear proper full-length track pants and shirts to avoid thorns. The hint here is to follow the electric towers present there. And as you go ahead you can find a proper trail after which the chances of losing track are less.

On your way you will come across a V-shaped valley and a ridge perpendicular to the path. At your left you can see a stall of lemon juice, continue in that direction.
Just before the lemon juice stall

While walking on that ridge, the panoramic view coupled with a breeze of air is just heaven. While walking on your right you can see Chanderi fort at a distance.

After a short while, you will come across a patch which requires you to pull yourself up a rock about 7-8 feet tall with the attached rope as I mentioned earlier. Be sure to keep yourself safe at this point as you might easily get a scratch while climbing. Also flexible track pants are preferable here.

The patch with the rope

Once this patch is done, its easy and almost similar to before trek till the top.

After the rock patch

Eventually, you will see a big cave with 'Kille Peb' written over it. There is also a temple next to it. A few steps ahead and you will also see some small inaccessible caves or tunnel which are filled with water but it isn't potable.
Outside the cave

Top of the fort :

Towards the end you will come across a stone wall with 2 ladders, climbing which you can see a water cistern.

Another 15 to 20 mins and you can see the temple at the top clearly. Once you have reached the temple you have conquered the top of vikatgad.
The temple

After this, you can ascend down the stairs towards the remains of the wall. The view from this spot is fantastic but be careful to keep safe distance from the edge. Here your trek is officially over.

Return journey :

You can return via the same route, but finding an auto is a bit difficult, so you can ask for the auto driver's number at the start so you can give him a call when you are at the base and he will pick you up.We returned via the 'Matheran track route' to neral.

Expenditure on trek :

Our total expenditure was around ₹250 that included total ₹100 snacks at start and end, ₹50 fare of Dadar-Neral-Dadar train journey, ₹30 shared auto and ₹80 cab for the return journey
